Srinagar, Sep 29. Mehbooba Mufti, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief, has announced that she is suspending her campaign for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections in protest of the death of Hezbollah Chief Hassan Nasrallah. Nasrallah was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in Beirut, Lebanon.
The former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister expressed her solidarity with the Lebanese and Palestinian people, particularly the martyrs of Lebanon and Gaza, through a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In her message, she called off her campaign for a day in response to the death, standing with the people of Palestine and Lebanon during this time of grief and resistance.
Her decision came amid growing protests in Jammu and Kashmir, where people took to the streets to condemn Nasrallah’s killing. Large gatherings, including women and children, were seen in regions like Budgam and Srinagar, where protesters held portraits of Nasrallah.
Nasrallah’s death was confirmed by both Israel and Hezbollah. It follows a series of Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon, part of the ongoing escalation between Hezbollah and Israel. The conflict intensified after Hezbollah launched rockets into Israel following an attack by Hamas in October 2023, leading to Israel’s continued military offensive in Lebanon and Gaza. The airstrikes have caused widespread casualties and displacement.
