New Delhi, Dec 8 – In a major step to boost religious tourism and support local communities, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday launched the Winter Char Dham Yatra at the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath, the winter home of Lord Kedarnath.
The event began with traditional prayers and rituals, officially marking the start of a pilgrimage that will now take place all year round. This is a big change, as the Char Dham Yatra used to stop during winter due to heavy snow in the Himalayan region.
During his visit to Rudraprayag district, CM Dhami announced the year-round pilgrimage plan, fulfilling a long-standing request. Now, the winter homes of the deities—Omkareshwar Temple for Kedarnath, along with locations in Badrinath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri—will welcome pilgrims even in the colder months.
Speaking at the launch, CM Dhami said, “The Winter Char Dham Yatra is a key step in making Uttarakhand a year-round pilgrimage destination. We are working hard to ensure everything runs smoothly. This will not only strengthen our religious heritage but also provide steady income for local people.”
The Winter Char Dham Yatra is expected to attract visitors from across India and even abroad, boosting tourism and the state’s economy during the off-season.
The launch event saw a large gathering, including Rudraprayag MLA Bharat Singh Chaudhary, Kedarnath MLA Asha Nautiyal, BKTC President Ajendra Ajay, BJP District President Mahavir Panwar, temple priests, and many local residents.
By offering a 12-month pilgrimage, this initiative balances tradition, spirituality, and economic growth, further cementing Uttarakhand’s reputation as Devbhoomi, the Land of Gods.
