Maldives President Muizzu Hopes for Economic Aid from India Amid Crisis
Male/New Delhi, Oct 6 (Patriotic views Desk) Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has expressed optimism that India will help his country address its ongoing economic crisis. The Maldives is facing a financial downturn, with foreign exchange reserves dropping to just $440 million, which is only enough to cover imports for about one and a half months.
President’s Confidence in India’s Support
In an interview with the BBC before his visit to India, President Muizzu said he is confident that India, as a key development partner, will assist the Maldives in overcoming its financial difficulties. “India is very familiar with our financial situation, and we can rely on them to help ease our burden,” President Muizzu said.
When asked about his past “India Out” campaign, which opposed Indian influence in the Maldives, President Muizzu emphasized that any disagreements can be resolved through dialogue.
Last month, global credit rating agency Moody’s downgraded the Maldives’ credit rating, warning of a high risk of default. Despite this, President Muizzu reassured that the Maldives is not at risk of defaulting on its debt and does not plan to join an International Monetary Fund (IMF) program. He mentioned, “We have our own agenda.”
President Muizzu is currently on an official visit to India, invited by President Droupadi Murmu. During the visit, he is set to meet with President Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other senior Indian officials to discuss strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
This is President Muizzu’s second official visit to India. He traveled on an Indian Defense Ministry aircraft, accompanied by a 50-member delegation. His team includes several ministers, officials from the President’s Office, ruling party members, and journalists.
Key Members of the Delegation
The President’s delegation includes:
- Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel
- Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon
- Finance Minister Moosa Zameer
- Health Minister Ahmed Nazim
- Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal
- Attorney General Ahmed Usham
and several others.
According to reports, the main purpose of the visit is to seek financial aid from India. While international media has mentioned this, neither the Maldives nor India has officially commented on the matter.
President Muizzu’s five-day visit is seen as crucial for discussing ways to improve the Maldives’ economic situation and strengthen ties with India.
