Kolkata Police Denies WBJDF Permission for Fast-Unto-Death Protest in RG Kar Case

Oct 5, 2024

Kolkata, Oct 5 (PV News) Kolkata Police have denied permission to the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Forum (WBJDF) for their planned fast-unto-death protest in response to the rape and murder of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College. The protest was scheduled to take place at Esplanade in central Kolkata from Saturday evening.

The WBJDF, after suspending their cease-work agitation, had informed the police of their plans via email on Friday, stating they would escalate to a hunger strike if nine of their ten demands were not met by the state government. However, on Saturday, the police declined the request, citing concerns about potential traffic congestion and disruption to public activities, especially with the Durga Puja festivities approaching.

The police noted that large crowds gathering for festival preparations and the movement of Durga idols could be significantly disrupted by the protest. They warned that allowing such a demonstration at Esplanade could lead to major public inconvenience and potential law and order issues.

As of now, the WBJDF has not announced their next course of action.
