Azharuddin Appears Before ED in HCA Case
Hyderabad, Oct 8 (P.views Desk) Former cricketer and politician Mohammed Azharuddin appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Hyderabad on Tuesday. He is being investigated in connection with an alleged money laundering case involving the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA).
Why Azharuddin Was Summoned
Azharuddin, who served as the HCA president, was asked to appear by the ED after being accused of misappropriating funds during his time in office. The ED had originally asked him to appear on October 3, but Azharuddin requested more time. A new notice was then issued, asking him to come on October 8.
Azharuddin, now the Working President of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), has denied the allegations, calling them false.
ED’s Investigation
The ED is investigating a suspected fraud of Rs 20 crore within the HCA. The investigation is based on three FIRs filed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in Hyderabad. The FIRs allege criminal misappropriation of funds related to the construction of the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium, including irregularities in the purchase of DG sets, firefighting systems, and other equipment.
Former HCA presidents and cricketers Arshad Ayub, Shivlal Yadav, and G. Vinod were also questioned by the ED as part of the investigation. In November last year, the ED searched nine locations across Telangana, including the homes of these former HCA officials.
Background on Azharuddin’s HCA Tenure
Azharuddin was elected president of the HCA in 2019, but his term was marked by internal conflicts. These disputes led to multiple legal battles, with warring groups taking the matter to the Telangana High Court and eventually the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court appointed a one-member committee to manage the affairs of the HCA and oversee elections. The committee disqualified Azharuddin from running in the HCA elections, citing a conflict of interest due to his role as president of the Deccan Blues Cricket Club while serving as HCA president.
Criminal Cases Against Azharuddin
In October 2023, four criminal cases were filed against Azharuddin and others for allegedly misusing Rs 3.85 crore of HCA funds. The funds were meant for purchasing cricket balls, gym equipment, fire safety equipment, and chairs for the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium.
Azharuddin and the others involved were charged with criminal breach of trust, cheating, forgery, and conspiracy. However, a city court later granted him anticipatory bail in these cases.
Conclusion
The ED’s investigation into the HCA’s financial dealings is ongoing, with Azharuddin being one of the key figures under scrutiny. Despite the accusations, he maintains that the claims against him are baseless.
