Cholera Outbreak in Nigeria Claims 359 Lives, Over 10,000 Suspected Cases
Abuja, Oct 5 (PV News) A cholera outbreak in Nigeria has claimed at least 359 lives across 33 states, including Lagos, between January and September 2023, according to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC). Over 10,837 suspected cases have been reported so far, with 15 new deaths from 198 recent cases in five states last week alone.
The NCDC, leading a multi-sectoral response, urged state authorities to strengthen cholera preparedness and management. Poor sanitation, open defecation, and limited access to clean water continue to challenge efforts to control the spread of the disease. Cholera, marked by severe diarrhea and dehydration, remains a recurring issue in densely populated areas of Nigeria.
